THE CONDITION
This axe in in very good-excellent condition, the finish is still white as a fresh dusting of Alpine snow, and has polished up lovely, and the frets are smooth and gleaming with little sign of wear. There are two small marks on the back of the neck photographed, but both are tiny cosmetic marks. The chrome work has also polished up nice with only a slight hint that it's starting to dull. Other than that the guitar is in great shape!

As with all our second hand guitars it's been through the Village Music Guitar Workshop for a set up from our pro in-store guitar tech for a low comfortable playing action and correct intonation, and been fitted with a fresh set of 10-46 gauge strings.

Build Quality (Circa 2020)

  • The 2020 “Inspired by Gibson” redesign introduced a revised Kalamazoo‑style headstock and elevated overall finish standards, widely seen as Epiphone’s best effort in years.

  • Constructed in China, with solid mahogany.

Reception by Reviewers & Players

  • Guitar World’s review praised the SG Standard’s playability, tone and overall finish, calling it “perhaps the best guitars they have done in years”. The pickups were noted as slightly dark, and the SG shape not to everyone’s taste—but overall highly recommended in its price bracket.

  • Equipboard summaries highlighted excellent value, smooth neck action, versatile pickups and durable build.

  • Reddit user consensus from late 2020 / early 2021 was overwhelmingly positive:

“Epiphone pretty much nailed 2020… everything else is ACE.”
“Truly outstanding… fret and nut work was very good”
“New headstocks are so much classier” and “plays as good as Gibson did”

Legacy

  • The 2020 SG Standard is widely seen as a turning point for Epiphone quality, often referenced in forums as “their best line‑up in years” and inspiring confidence in the brand’s modern offering.

  • The Alpine White finish in particular gained cult status among players for its stage presence and clean aesthetic—many recalling that specific colour fondly years later.

  • Its fidelity to the Gibson SG form, paired with approachable pricing has solidified this model as a favourite first SG or mod platform for upgrades (e.g., pickup or hardware swaps).

  • In retrospect, the 2020 SG Standard is now considered a benchmark of affordable excellence, balancing classic SG tone and feel with modern reliability, and is still recommended as a go‑to SG today.
