The Gibson Chet Atkins CE is a remarkable fusion of solid-body electric guitar and classical guitar. Developed in collaboration with guitarist Chet Atkins and luthier Hascal Haile, this nylon-string instrument allows for feedback-free playing at amplified stage volumes. Key features Include:

  • Construction: The CEC features a solid mahogany body with sound chambers to reduce weight and enhance acoustic resonance. The top is made of solid spruce.
  • Neck: The mahogany neck has a 12th-fret neck joint, similar to a classical guitar. The scale length is 25 1/2".
  • Fingerboard:  ebony fingerboard.
  • Pickup System: Equipped with a multi-element piezo bridge pickup and a battery-powered preamp, the CE balances output and allows for individual string adjustments.
  • Nut Width: The conventional neck width (nut width) is 1 13/16" (4.6 cm), although a narrower version was also available.

MORE INFO

  • Body: Solid mahogany with sound chambers for weight reduction and a more resonant, acoustic sound. The top could be either solid spruce or cedar, depending on the year of production, adding tonal complexity. This chambered design was a key feature, differentiating it from traditional solid-body electric guitars and offering a more natural, "breathable" sound.
  • Neck: Crafted from mahogany, it joined the body at the 12th fret, replicating the classical guitar design for a familiar playing experience. The scale length was 25.5 inches, a common size for both classical and electric guitars, offering a good balance between string tension and playability.
  • Fingerboard and Bridge: Luxurious ebony, a dense and dark wood known for its smooth feel and bright tonal response, perfect for the clarity of nylon strings.
  • Pickups: An innovative system of six individual piezo pickups nestled under the bridge captured the nuanced vibrations of each string. Early models featured a single volume control and an active tone control discreetly placed on the rim of the guitar. Later versions offered separate bass and treble controls for more tonal shaping.
  • Aesthetics: While not as ornate as a traditional classical guitar, the CE possessed a Gibson-esque elegance. The single-cutaway design offered easy access to the higher frets, and the use of high-quality woods ensured a visually stunning instrument.

THE CONDITION
This guitar was previously owned buy out late-great guitar tech, Tam Stevenson, and has been maintained with the utmost care, showing only the lightest signs of use. Never the less, it's been through the VM workshop for some TLC and a fresh set of D'addario Pro Art Hard Tension nylon stings.

The action is currently sitting at 1.9mm on the bass end, and 1.5mm on the treble.
